Hawaiian pronunciation, Anyone?
For choir at school, we thought to sing "Silent Night" in Hawaiian (With the approach of Christmas). We have been asked to find the words, which was easy, but now that I look at it, I do not know not how in the world, I'm supposed to say (let alone sing)! Any kind of help on any part of it would be great. Thank you! Silent Night "in Hawaiian: The Po 'ie, KAMAHA po` o, Maluhia, malamalama e ke aloha Ka makuahine hemolele keiki me ka me e Moe Moe me ka Lani Maluhia Maluhia The Po Lani said, KAMAHA po `o, HIPA Kahu Oni na ko ka lani e I. Mele Nani" na haleluia anela not. Hanau 'ia Kristo ka Haku. Hanau 'ia Kristo ka Haku. Po "The words, PO KAMAHA` o, Keiki Aloha hiwahiwa e, Ka Lama La luna "Mai Mai i` i me ka lokomaika makamae. Iesu i kou Hanau Anah. Iesu i kou Hanau Anah.
Fortunately, the Hawaiian way is written is very simple. Most things are pronounced as spelled, but let me highlight some things that belong to the Hawaiian phonology. Firstly, all the sounds of Hawaii is also common in English, except for the glottal stop. The glottal stop is that little … click you can almost feel in your throat when you say "uhhhh". In Hawaii, that sound is used as a normal part of speech. strokes glottis is not a real big deal when it comes to singing well. The letter "L" in malamalama represents a glottal stop, I think. Other things you really need to know about Hawaii is that it contains some diphthongs that you might try to pronounce two distinct sounds. For example, "ai" is always the "I" as in "Hawaii", "Ei" is "a" as in "Kate". "Au" is pronounced like German "in" (as in Windau or Kaufland). "Or" is prounced as "oo". I am sure you would normally assign these or similar pronunciations of Hawaiian diphthongs, but I can just see someone in your choir to try to pronounce vowels as separate its exoticism. Remember that the purpose of the apostrophe in Hawaiian is to break the diphthongs. Only in words like "la'ie" Would you pronounce a and i separately.
