My mother claims it has Taiwanese origins, Wikipedia says it's origins are from Shanghai (with mention of Hong Kong and Taiwan). I'm all about the generalization, is a dish with Chinese origins. Fan Tuan is essentially a sushi roll stuffed with minced pork, Zhai CAI (preservered mustard greens) and Chinese donut. If these ingredients are foreign to you … Well, it's time to try new things, no? This dish offers a satisfying crunch and bite of goodness wrapped in sticky rice. Normally it is eaten for breakfast but I could not eat all this time of day (or night!) This dish is surprisingly easy to do if you have the ingredients and equipment on hand (which actually made homemade donuts Chinese anyway?) Ingredients 2 cups of sticky rice, uncooked (aka sweet rice or glutinous rice) 2-3 Chinese donuts (ready to eat) 1 package Zha cai rousong 1 cup (or Yu Song) Directions 1. the preparation of sweet rice – Place rice in a bowl of water. Wash the rice until the water becomes clear (this may take 3-4 times). Drain and soak the rice in clean water overnight. 2. After the rice has absorbed during overnight, drain and place them in the boat. (If steam holes are too large and the rice could fall through, line it with cheese first.) Complete pan with water, making sure it does not touch the steamer. Steam for about 30 minutes and check. It may need a another 10 minutes or so. The consistency of the rice should be soft and sticky – not mashed! 3. Zha cai Rinse several times and chop finely. 4. If your Chinese donuts freshly prepared and deliciously crispy, skip to Step 5. If your Chinese donuts without the factor of crunchy, put them in the toaster. 5. Cover with a sushi roll (I prefer the facts of bamboo) with plastic wrap. The plastic film should be the lightest the size as the sushi roll. Spread a thin layer of sticky rice over half of the roll of bamboo. 6. Place the donut Chinese (cut to size roll bamboo), 1-2 tps Zha CAI, and a few tablespoons of rousong on the middle of rice. 7. Roll rice until the end of the key rice (it like rolling sushi). Remove the plastic wrap as you eat! it falls off before it can be messy and plastic wrap keeps the rice from hardening.
