Question on making guitars?
I plan to make a classical guitar. I was going to use Spanish cedar for the neck because I want to do Flamenco. I Spanish cedar prices on a website that responds to the guitar makers and it was about five times more for the same size as the cedar Spanish website from a timber generally. Is there a difference if I buy the wood from a luthier shop vs. store lumber as the dimensions are correct?
It is clear that much difference. The quality of wood you get from a lumberyard is much weaker and inconsistent. In theory, you could get a piece that is appropriate, in practice, it has rarely, if ever works this way. More knots, bad grain, badly weathered and recovered, etc.etc. Good enough for door frames and shoring, not enough Tonewood for musical instruments.
