If I buy a jointer, I'll also need a plane?

I get wood, and I'm really cheap. I do not want to continue to pay all sorts of money Lowes for wood finishes, so I need to get some type of timing device for my shop. My question is, (and bear in mind I do not know what I mean) if I get a trainer I also do not need a plane or can I use the straightening of all sides? To the best of my knowledge, the trainer of wood is flat and planer makes the wood of a defined thickness. If I am not terribly affected by the thickness, can I convert a piece of wood and straightening of the other side and call it good?

Well Well, sir, none of these items are cheap and it has been my experience, they are rarely worth the space they eat.
