The choice of wood for your projects: softwood and hardwood
Two main types of softwood and hardwood are. Another popular choice is made of wood such as plywood. What type of wood you choose to use for your projects depends on a variety of factors including: the budget and cost, need strength, hardness, grain characteristics and color, stability, weight, durability and availability.
Wood tender
Top craftsmen word most often start with pine resin like it because it's soft, it is easier to job, then you do not need expensive tools to get quality results. Pine is easily accessible and lumberyard shelters, said it has limitations in the manufacture of furniture because it is a soft wood and can damage easily.
Wood comes from a Coniferous (cone) or evergreen tree. most popular varieties are fir, pine, cedar, spruce, hemlock and redwood. Although these types of wood are used in the construction industry in the floor housing and other projects, redwood and cedar are excellent choices for outdoor projects such as benches, and pine is used extensively in "Early American Country Style" bench and projects of other furniture.
Some tips:
– Pine and other softwoods generally absorb and lose moisture more than hardwoods, therefore, they are not considered stable.
– Buy your drink at least two weeks before starting your project and keep it inside.
– You can usually find lumber in standard thickness and width as 1 X 4 3 / 4 "
thick and 3 1 / 2 inches wide, similar to building materials.
Please note that wood is usually priced by linear foot, with the price increased accordingly for wider boards.
Hardwood
just hardwood from deciduous trees. The main domestic varieties include maple, oak, birch, cherry, ash, walnut and poplar. Poplar and Red Oak are those commonly stored in home centers and lumberyards. And the material is usually sold in sizes similar to those it is softwood, also by the linear foot. You can call ahead to see what types of wood are available and in what sizes at specialty timber and building supplies stores.
Working with hardwoods is quite different from the work of pines. For example, you can not drive a screw into the hardwoods without first drilling a hole. More cutting and planing hardwoods requires extremely sharp tools.
Hardwoods such as ash and oak forests are known as open-grained, with alternating areas of relatively porous and dense wood, and are good to use with furniture crafts. The open-grain absorb the color easily when stained, while the more difficult areas are more resistant. This tends to accentuate the reasons grain and can create a dramatic effect.
